About BarbW

I have a daughter with end-stage liver disease with many complications who lives in Vegas. She is indigent, but lives with her ex, who is her only source of aid in transportation or any other support (except when I can help out). I want to help, but her long history of alcohol abuse and numerous other problems in dealing with life have left her with few options at this point. I cannot bring her to stay with me in AZ unless I want to end my 20-year marriage. She has no children.

I need to find out whether or not a medical social worker employed at a hospital when she's a patient can actually help her gain access to disability and/or other medical & financial help, without she herself having to physically go to the various offices to get these needs documented. I recently drove out to help her by bringing her home from UMC hospital in order to get started on her recovery and other needs to get the financial help she has put off for so long while drinking so heavily in the past. However, after 2 days she was never able to get up off the couch or even use her walker due to her current weakness from over a month & numerous transfusions, etc. in the hospital. At that point she asked me to leave because I wasn't strong enough to get her into a wheelchair, let alone a vehicle. Additionally she advised I was causing her stress by my own (apparently obvious) stress in dealing with her difficulties. She assured me her ex would be able to get her to any needed appointments in town, knowing he must work basically day-to-day casual labor. Within a day or so she called her sister in CA and described herself as isolated with nowhere to go. She has a long history of manipulative and self-destructive behavior. Also 2 attempted stays with me and her stepfather in '04 and '06 during which she incurred a DUI and later, a wasted $20K drug program in AZ. That's why I can't bring her to my home.

So far she has only a NV ID and a telephone appointment tomorrow afternoon with one of the aid agencies. I'm trying to get all the information I can before again attempting to drive out there only to find myself unable to do anything.

Many thanks to whomever may be reading this for listening to my dilemma. Anything I can learn about the best way to help my daughter is very much appreciated.
